What you can pay with, and what nobody can.
Virgin Cannabis does not accept credit or debit cards. Cannabis is federally illegal, so the card networks will not process it and almost no dispensary can. We take Chime, Apple Pay and Cash App instead. You pay when the order is placed, so no cash changes hands at your door. Payment instructions appear at checkout, on the invoice, and in your order email.
Why can dispensaries not take cards?
Cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance under United States federal law, whatever a state has legalised. Visa, Mastercard and the banks behind them will not knowingly process transactions for it, so licensed retailers work through payment rails that do. This is an industry-wide constraint, not a Virgin Cannabis policy, and any retailer quietly running cannabis sales through a card terminal is doing something their processor would shut down.
What can I actually pay with?
| Method | Accepted | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chime | Yes | We send Pay Anyone details after the order is placed. Quote your order number. |
| Apple Pay | Yes | We send a payment request to the phone on the order. Nothing is charged until you confirm it. |
| Cash App | Yes | Pay on the Cash App page with the amount filled in. Fund your balance first. |
| Credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex) | No | Card networks will not process federally illegal goods |
| Debit card | No | Same restriction as credit |
| Cash at the door | No | Orders are paid before dispatch; drivers carry no cash |
When do I pay?
At checkout, before the order is dispatched. Two things follow from that: the driver carries no cash, which is safer for everybody, and your order is confirmed before anybody sets off, so nothing is picked and packed on the assumption you will pay later.
What about tax?
Tax is calculated at fulfilment rather than estimated in the basket, because cannabis excise and local rates differ across the 15 states we serve and sometimes between jurisdictions inside one of them. The basket shows the subtotal, the delivery fee and any discount before you pay; the tax line is applied against the address the order is going to.
Is there anything free?
Delivery is free on orders over $150. Below that a flat $8 applies, and express delivery is $18. Those figures are the same in every state we operate in. See current offers for anything running on top.
Questions people actually ask
Do you take cards?
No — not credit, not debit. Cannabis is federally illegal in the United States, so the card networks will not process it and licensed retailers cannot offer it. We accept Chime, Apple Pay and Cash App, all paid at checkout before the order is dispatched. Payment instructions for the method you choose are shown at checkout, on the invoice, and in the order email.
Can I pay the driver in cash?
No. Orders are paid in full when they are placed, which means the driver carries no cash at any point. It is safer for the driver, safer for you, and it means handover is only an ID check and a signature rather than a transaction on a doorstep.
Is there an extra fee for paying this way?
No. Virgin Cannabis adds nothing on top for any of the accepted methods — the price you see in the basket is the price charged. Your own bank or app may apply its own terms, which is between you and them rather than something we can see or control.
When exactly is tax added?
At fulfilment, against the address the order is going to. Cannabis excise and local sales tax vary across the 15 states we serve, so an estimate in the basket would be wrong more often than right. The subtotal, delivery fee and any discount are all shown before you pay.
What can I pay with?
Checkout accepts Chime, Apple Pay and Cash App only. Each method carries written payment instructions at checkout, on your invoice, and in the order email. Cash App: fund your balance first, then pay the amount already filled in. Chime and Apple Pay: we contact you with the details after the order is placed — nothing is charged until then.
